Tybee Lighthouse, Georgia

Image
Ryan surprised me with a road trip to see this lighthouse on Tybee island.  Tybee Lighthouse is Georgia's oldest and tallest Lighthouse. It  was built in 1773 and has been rebuilt several times.  It is 145 feet tall, with 178 steps to the top.  History says that the steps were put in place one at a time and rotated into position.  I climbed the top one step at a time. We enjoyed the view of the calm Atlantic Ocean, the blue water of Savannah River and the peaceful Tybee island.  Seeing my first lighthouse in Georgia was a milestone for me.  Driving the road was another one. We visited Savannah then headed to Madison for Thanksgiving.  It was wonderful weekend.

Portland Head Light, Maine

A lighthouse to remember. The Portland Head Light, located along the scenic coastlines of Fort Williams Park is a historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Completed in 1791, it  is the oldest lighthouse and a popular landmark in the state of Maine.  It has a height of 70 feet.  Over the Portland harbor and Casco Bay, there are four more lighthouses towers visible from the area. Someday, I will get to see all of them. The American Poet from Maine, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow says  - - "The rocky ledge runs far out into the sea. And on its outer point, some miles away, the lighthouse lifts its massive masonry. A pillar of fire by night, of cloud by day." This is a part of his popular poem - -  "The Lighthouse." I chose Portland Head Light as my first lighthouse to visit in America back in 2014, because it is known as one of the most strikingly beautiful lighthouse locations in New England. I didn't see it on the most pict

Basco Lighthouse, Philippines

Image
My last frontier and a wonderful beginning. Basco Lighthouse is located in the town of Basco in Batanes, the northernmost province in the Philippines. It is one of my favorite places in the Philippines.  The open sea and luscious hills provide a beautiful backdrop for the Lighthouse. It welcomes those who appreciate the beauty of nature and the value of blissfulness. The viewing deck is a perfect location to view the whole island. It is a perfect place to find serenity. This 66 feet structure was completed in 2003. History says that the site of the Lighthouse was also the site of the American telegraph facilities that connected Batanes with the government until it was destroyed in World War II. Today, this site is one of the tourist attractions in Batanes.  I visited this Lighthouse in May 2012. It was the first Lighthouse I've visited and my last frontier before I moved to the US.  It was indeed one of the best travels of my life.
