Our Lady of the Rocks, Montenegro
Viva Montenegro!
Our Lady of the Rocks is one of the two islets off the coast of Perast in Kotor Bay, Montenegro. According to the legend, "the islet was made by a local seaman who kept an ancient oath after finding the icon of "Madonna and Child" on the rock in the sea on July 22, 1452. Upon returning from each successful voyage, they laid a rock in the bay, and overtime, the islet gradually emerged from the sea."
The custom of throwing rocks into the sea is still in practice. Every July 22, on a sunset, local residents take their boats and throw rocks into the sea. This event is called "fasinada."
Our Lady of the Rocks church contains 68 paintings by famous 17th-century baroque artists and a famous tapestry embroidered by Jacinta. History says "that it took her 25 yrs. to finish it while waiting for her darling to come from a long journey, she eventually became blind. But what makes this tapestry so famous is the fact that she also embroidered her own hair in it."
Such an interesting story of this beautiful place. The legend of the islet and the church's history make Our Lady of the Rocks a special place. I love visiting churches on my travels. I am glad to have seen this one.
From Kotor Bay, we had a short boat ride to reach the islet. The magnificent view of the bay didn't want me to get off the boat. I wanted to stay longer and sail more. Nevertheless, we got off the boat and saw the lighthouse waiting for me.
I was more than excited to see her standing on one tip of the islet. She is a landmark at the bay and guides boats and ships that pass by. She watches the sea. She welcomes the visitors of the church. She may be a petite tower yet full of radiance with her white-colored paint. She is a piece of history.
I am grateful to have traveled to these places and hear their stories. I am lucky to have seen these natural and man-made creations. I am joyful to share these photos and experiences.
